How do I renew my domain name?

Updated October 2026 · How we answer

Short answerLog in to your registrar's website, find your domain in the dashboard, and follow the renewal prompts. You can usually renew manually or set up auto-renew to avoid expiration.

Steps to renew

Most registrars send reminder emails before expiration. Log in to your account, locate the domain management section, and look for a renewal option. You'll pay the renewal fee, which may differ from the initial registration price. Renewal periods are typically one year, but you can often renew for multiple years upfront.

If you have auto-renew enabled, the registrar will charge your saved payment method automatically. Make sure your payment info is up to date to avoid failed renewals.

  • Log in to your registrar account
  • Find the domain in your dashboard
  • Click 'Renew' and choose the number of years
  • Complete payment
  • Verify renewal in your account or via confirmation email

Timing and grace periods

You can usually renew up to 30 days before expiration. After expiration, most registrars offer a grace period of 0–45 days (varies by TLD and registrar) during which you can still renew at the normal price. After that, you may enter a redemption period with a hefty fee, or the domain may be deleted.

If you miss the grace period, you might still be able to recover the domain during the redemption period, but expect to pay $80–$200 or more. Once it's deleted, it goes back to the public pool.

Common mistakes

  • Ignoring renewal reminder emails and letting the domain expire.
  • Assuming auto-renew is on when it's not; always double-check your settings.
  • Waiting until the last minute and missing the grace period, resulting in a costly redemption.
